Take It Easy

A common expression in English is “take it easy“ (無理しないで).  Easy means 簡単 or simple.  But it also has the meaning of feeling relaxed, no stress, and calm.

This is a very useful expression that you can use in many different situations.  For example,

When someone is angry/upset you can tell them to “take it easy”.  In this example you are asking them to be calm, to relax.

Jim:   I hate my job!! I want to quit!!

Alex:  Hey, take it easy. You shouldn’t quit your job or you will regret it.

You can also use the expression “take it easy” when you want someone to be very careful.  This means to make very easy and slow movements.  For example,

Doctor:  Nurse, please help me move the patient to a different bed.

Nurse:  Yes doctor.

Doctor:  Ok, lets begin.  Easy, easy, take it easy, and good job.

You can also use “take it easy” when you say goodbye to someone.  It has a meaning like (お大事に).  For example,

Manager:  Thank you for your hard work today.  Take care and I will see you tomorrow.

Employee:  Thank you sir, take it easy and I will see you in the morning.
