Grammar Practice

Let’s practice using some verbs.  Verbs can sometimes be used as adjectives and as nouns.  This is called a participle(分詞).  For example lets use the verb “cry”.

The crying baby wanted to drink milk.

“Crying” is used in its present form as an adjective.     If you ask the question “Which baby?” it is easier to see that the verb is being used as an adjective. The answer would be the “crying baby”.

Now lets use the past participle of the verbs “break” and “smash

The broken light and the smashed window were proof(証明) that a thief had entered our house.

Again we can ask the questions, Which light? The broken light.  Which window? The smashed window.  This helps us to understand the verbs are being used as adjectives.

A verb can also be used as a noun which is called a gerund(動詞状名詞).

For example lets use the verb “cook“.

I hate cooking because it is boring.

Cooking is the direct object of the verb hate.
