Useful English

It is very common to use the words “like” and “don’t like”.

For example:

I usually like to drink wine but  I don’t like to drink beer.

Sometimes it can sound a little strong.  For example:   If you are talking to your boss and your boss likes to drink beer.  Maybe he will not invite you to go drinking together since you do not like beer.

In this situation you can also use the word prefer. It is a very polite word and very useful in a business situation.

For example:  I usually prefer to drink wine but i don’t prefer to drink beer.

This sentence has the same meaning but it sounds a little softer than using like. Your boss may think your favorite is wine, but if you have no choice, maybe you will also drink beer.
